What we have in the GTX 1660 is a very welcome, if somewhat predictable graphics card which slots in almost perfectly in amongst other mid-range cards out there. Nvidia’s statement that performance is around 15% better than the GTX GB is maybe even underselling the GTX 1660’s performance. It is also important to note that although the gtx 1090 is based on the Turing architecture, the GPU does not have Tensor or RT cores that the RTX-20-series cards have. Though the GTX 1660 Ti has slower memory, it’s still at the top of this 3-card stack due to having more CUDA cores, more texture units, and a bigger L1 cache. The new 1660 Super will also support all the new software advancements Nvidia is announcing today as well. At 1,920 x 1,080, the GTX 1660 was a huge amount faster than the GTX GB, offering a near 30% speed boost to the minimum frame rate. While there was a big step up on the minimum from the RX 590, the latter was only 2fps behind on the average frame rate. Given the price difference between it and the GTX 1660 Ti, the pricing here is pretty much spot on too, with the more expensive Turing card adding around 15% on top of the GTX 1660’s performance. So coming to the specifications of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER, the card would rock 1408 CUDA cores, 80 Texture Mapping Units, and 48 raster operation units.
In our launch-day review we concluded it was the first GPU release in some time that we’d come away feeling completely pleased. The 1660 Ti offered GTX 1070-like performance for a slight price premium over the GTX GB. Without any competition from AMD it was a pretty good result. But, for now, the RX 590 is still a decent gaming card, especially now it’s dropped well below the $200 mark, but the GTX 1660 does still outperform it and will likely join it down the price scale once the Super hits the shelves.
