On June 12, 1997, the company becomes a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1977, Diane Keaton and Woody Allen wore Lauren’s clothes in the Oscar-winning film, Annie Hall. Lauren started The Ralph Lauren Corporation in 1967 with men’s ties. At 28 years-old, Lauren worked for the tie manufacturer Beau Brummell.
Basically, what hits you first is the mix of cut grass and other plants, then the unmistakable piquant smell of the black pepper. 90% of what I’ve sampled before have been women’s fragrances, which tend to skimp on the black pepper. While I think that it would smell quite masculine and attractive on a man, I’m not sure that a woman wouldn’t be able to wear it in the right circumstances.
Nothing gender neutral or metrosexual about this, it’s out there letting others know this what it means to be manly. It’s old skool in the same category as cerruti 1886, Givenchy gentleman, quorum. the kind of aftershave your dad or grandad still wears. I’m not sure this appeals to a younger generation and you either love it or hate. But it is definitely a very formal scent.
Perhaps this sort of thing made a lasting impression on me as a kid – Brut and soap-on-a-rope for Xmas, I don’t know. But I’m learning that the woodsy/green/leathers with earthy patch/vetiver/oakmoss drydowns are usually winners for me. The tobacco note in Polo, as elsewhere, only serves to make me love this more. Got a 237ml bottle of this as Xmas present to myself – ‘cos I is werf it. I never wore this on a regular basis in the past but I believe the recently purchased bottle I have, though true to what I remember, has the overall heft and base notes dialed back.
Considering the overall profile of this scent, I’d recommend it for formal or semi formal occasions, day and night, spring, fall and winter. But, I have difficulties getting over the “green swamp opening” and that’s the reason I can only give it a “like” instead of a “love”. Fragrantica® Trends is a relative value that shows the interest of Fragrantica members in this fragrance over time. In 2004, the Polo Fashion School was established, in which company executives work with inner-city youth to offer insights into the fashion business. The company entered the European market, and went international, in 1981 with the opening of the first freestanding store in New Bond Street in the West End of London, England. Lauren opened his first flagship in the Rhinelander mansion, on Madison Avenue and 72nd Street in New York City in 1986.
Mainly it seems very green, fresh, and spicy. Vintage Cosmair Polo is by far the king of all fragrances to me alone I suppose. I purchased my first bottle in 1982 and I couldn’t get ralph lauren t shirt enough of it. Mind blowing good, everyone wore it and the ladies liked it too. It was the only fragrance I wore until 1994 when my girlfriend bought me Dolce and Gabbana Pour Homme.
Also woods and patchouli along with moss, and a hint of leather. I like this scent the most when initially applied as I can smell the pine and fir. Under drydown it becomes exclusively tobacco, leather, and woods. Moderate sillage and strong longevity. I’m just not that great of a fan of the scent – especially in drydown – the tobacco and leather kind of ruin it for me; I would prefer a more natural forest scent.

Smells green all day long – if you would like something more cleaner and less daring then floris 1962 is an option. A true Masterpiece of art in fragrance. All others should bow down before the great green Polo god. Lasts 4 to 5 hours on me, and radiates around 5 feet away.
