Legion 5 15 Gaming Laptop With Amd Ryzen
That might look like a marginal performance difference, but it still matters. NVIDIA websites use cookies to deliver and improve the website experience. That means in memory bandwidth bound circumstances, the GeForce Super may outrun the Ti, even though the latter has more GPU compute and texturing resources available. NVIDIA is expanding its GeForce GTX family of graphics cards today, with a pair of new Turing-based GPUs. As their branding suggests, the new GeForce GTX 1660 Super and GeForce GTX 1650 Super sit above their “non-Super” branded counterparts in NVIDIA’s line-up, but a notch below GeForce GTX Ti variants. It is only the GeForce GTX 1660 Super that is arriving on store shelves today, however.
Kicking off the first of the actual hardware launches for this holiday rumble is NVIDIA, who is announcing their GeForce Super. This is a relatively minor, but none the less interesting revision to the GTX 1660 family that adds a SKU with faster GDDR6 memory for improved performance. Along with the GeForce GTX 1650 Super , these two cards are going to be the backbone of NVIDIA’s mainstream efforts to close out the year. And while NVIDIA’s other GTX 1660 cards aren’t going anywhere, as we’re going to see today, with its $229 price tag, the GDDR6-equipped GTX 1660 Super is pretty much going to make the other 1660 cards redundant.
Get 1.4X power efficiency over previous generation for a faster, cooler and quieter gaming experience that take advantage of Turing’s advanced graphics features. Obviously, MSI will offer several SKUs, in the above table you can see the naming, cooling option and listed Boost clocks for your reference. Having smaller TU116 silicon with close to 6.6 Billion transistors it doesn’t run very warm.
The Super cards in particular have added significantly to this count, with NVIDIA shipping what amounts to a mid-generation refresh for their lineup not even a year into its launch. Looking to fill in the mainstream portion of the market, AMD is already shipping its Radeon RX 5500 series cards to OEMs – with retail to follow shortly – and meanwhile NVIDIA is making its own machinations for the market. While the gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb is a solid choice, we wouldn’t put it at the top of our list. We think that for the same price, the AMD offers superior performance. That said, the GTX 1660 has vastly improved from the previous GTX 1060 model.
Finally, if you do pick this graphics card up, you will need external power to make it run, in this case an 8-pin PCIe power connector. This means that the GTX 1660 Super does draw 127.4W alone in the most taxing situations, so you should make sure you have at least a 500W power supply. One thing you should be aware of is that the ports are a bit limited on the GeForce GTX 1660 Super. We tested the EVGA GTX 1660 Super SC Ultra, and it’s limited to DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort. This isn’t exactly a graphics card that you’re going to run 10 displays off of, but we would have liked to see Nvidia drop the DVI port and add in either a second HDMI or maybe even a USB-C port.
Despite using a much cheaper CPU than my test system, there was no difference in the frame rates in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, with the Scan Gamer PC managing a healthy minimum frame rate of 54fps. In TU116, Nvidia replaces Turing’s Tensor cores with 128 dedicated FP16 cores per SM, which allow GeForce GTX 1660 to process half-precision operations at 2x the rate of FP32. The other Turing-based GPUs boast double-rate FP16 as well through their Tensor cores, so TU116’s configuration serves to maintain that standard through hardware put in place specifically for this GPU. The following chart is an updated version of the one published in our GeForce GTX 1660 Ti review, which illustrates TU116’s massive improvement to half-precision throughput compared to GeForce GTX 1060 and its Pascal-based GP106 chip. Rather than upgrades, I think the biggest draw for the GTX 1660 will be with new PC builds—newcomers looking to put together a capable budget gaming PC will find plenty to like with this card.
