Kicking off the first of the actual hardware launches for this holiday rumble is NVIDIA, who is announcing their GeForce GTX 1660 Super. This is a relatively minor, but none the less interesting revision to the GTX 1660 family that adds a SKU with faster GDDR6 memory for improved performance. Along with the GeForce GTX 1650 Super , these two cards are going to be the backbone of NVIDIA’s mainstream efforts to close out the year. And while NVIDIA’s other GTX 1660 cards aren’t going anywhere, as we’re going to see today, with its $229 price tag, the GDDR6-equipped GTX 1660 Super is pretty much going to make the other 1660 cards redundant.

It requires Tensor cores to run and the GTX 1660, 1660 Super, and 1660 Ti just don’t have them, so they will not be able to use DLSS.

At time of writing, Nvidia have yet to confirm whether the GTX 1660 is getting any kind of bundle deal, but given there’s currently no bundle deal attached to the GTX 1660 Ti, I think it’s unlikely the GTX 1660 will get anything either. The RX 580, meanwhile, lets you choose from two of those games, which together with its slightly lower price may be enough to offset its closer to GTX 1060-levels of performance. From a pure performance point of view, the GTX 1660 is the superior card in this respect, offering pretty much identical if not slightly faster speeds at 1080p and 1440p to the RX 590. We saw a little bit of that in games like Project Cars 2, Prey and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. But we also saw a lot of gains in the vicinity of 7-13%, which is how we arrived at a 10% improvement on average. There were even a few titles such as The Witcher 3, For Honor and Monster Hunter World which saw gains in the 18 to 25% range.
Finishing up the gaming benchmarks we have Middle-earth Shadow of War and here the 1660 Super was 19% faster than the base model and just 3% slower than the Ti version, so again another excellent result. Resident Evil 2 shows almost no performance uplift for the 1660 Super over the gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb standard 1660, just a ~2% increase for the average frame rate. Just in time for the holiday shopping season, we have not one but two new Super graphics cards from Nvidia. The cooler on the card features a pair of axial fans, with some subtle design tweaks to improve performance.
The GTX 1660 Super slots in at $230 and there’s also the 1650 Super coming next month, no word on pricing yet. We should note that both Gigabyte and ASUS have an array of GeForce GTX 1660 Super cards coming down the pipeline, with varied designs and clock speeds. There is a bit of subtle RGB lighting on the Asus Dual GeForce GTX 1660 Super EVO OC too.
Despite using a much cheaper CPU than my test system, there was no difference in the frame rates in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, with the Scan Gamer PC managing a healthy minimum frame rate of 54fps. In TU116, Nvidia replaces Turing’s Tensor cores with 128 dedicated FP16 cores per SM, which allow GeForce GTX 1660 to process half-precision operations at 2x the rate of FP32. The other Turing-based GPUs boast double-rate FP16 as well through their Tensor cores, so TU116’s configuration serves to maintain that standard through hardware put in place specifically for this GPU. The following chart is an updated version of the one published in our GeForce GTX 1660 Ti review, which illustrates TU116’s massive improvement to half-precision throughput compared to GeForce GTX 1060 and its Pascal-based GP106 chip. Rather than upgrades, I think the biggest draw for the GTX 1660 will be with new PC builds—newcomers looking to put together a capable budget gaming PC will find plenty to like with this card.

Obviously, MSI will offer several SKUs, gtx 1090 in the above table you can see the naming, cooling option and listed Boost clocks for your reference. Having smaller TU116 silicon with close to 6.6 Billion transistors it doesn’t run very warm.
