The Skil DL PWRCore 12 Brushless 12V 1/2″ Cordless Drill Driver Kit comes with only one battery, and at 7 inches it’s longer than the rest of the 12-volt brushless drills we tested. The charger can give it 25% of the charge in five minutes, which almost offsets the lack of a second battery. But this Skil model falls short in power versus the others we tried.

As the company’s capabilities expanded, so did their inventory of power tools. Today DeWALT is one of the leading manufacturers of power dewalt Hand tools tools in the world. This drill comes with a 5 year limited warranty which is one of the indicators of quality and durability.

In our tests, the Makita XFD11RB Sub Compact Drill/Driver wasn’t as powerful as either the Ridgid or the DeWalt. It also tends to be more expensive, and it has the LED positioned at the top of the handle. Ridgid and Black+Decker do not offer brushless 12-volt drills, and Ryobi discontinued their 12-volt line. During our tests, the Atomic drilled 32 1-inch holes, about 10 more than the 12-volt and 10 less than the 20-volt—a median measure right down the middle on performance. It sports the nice DeWalt handle, and has solid durability and the well-positioned LED .

DeWalt’s drill also has two different speed settings, but theirs has a slightly lower maximum speed compared to Milwaukee. Their low-speed setting goes from 0 to 450 RPM, and their high-speed setting goes from 0 to 1500 RPM. Their low-speed setting goes from 0 to 400 RPM, and their high-speed setting goes from 0 to 1800 RPM. Most drills range between 300 and 1500 RPM and allow you to dewalt tools toggle between multiple speed settings. High RPM makes it easy to drill holes into dense materials, but lower RPM make it easier to maintain control and avoid stripping screws when driving. I chose to focus on Milwaukee’s M18 Compact Drill/Driver and DeWalt’s 20V Drill/Driver in this review because they are both cordless, powerful, durable, easy to use, and relatively affordable.

The Hitachi DS18DSAL 18-Volt Compact Pro Lithium Ion Drill/Driver doesn’t come close to matching the DeWalt 20-volt’s power or endurance. It’s sold only in a kit with a cordless work light, but the light has an incandescent bulb and isn’t very bright. The DeWalt DCD701F2 kit comes with two batteries and a small duffel-style carrying case. You won’t find a ton of additional room in the bag, but it’s enough for you to keep some drill and driver bits or a couple of other small tools. Even with the drill inside, the bag is compact, and you can easily stuff it in a closet or on a basement shelf. With the battery designed to slide into the base of the handle, DeWalt also had room to place the LED down below the grip.
