MSI applies their latest iteration of the TWIN FROZR 7 cooler for the GeForce GTX 1660 which makes use of two 9 cm TORX 3.0 fans which combine the advantages of both traditional and dispersion fan blades to generate huge amounts of airflow. The new trims on the traditional fan blades create concentrated airflow for higher air pressure while also reducing noise. The Gaming X edition has been designed with budget in mind and is merely a few tenners more expensive over reference. It’s an attractive product with good cooling and acoustic performance.
Kicking off the first of the actual hardware launches for this holiday rumble is NVIDIA, who is announcing their GeForce Super. This is a relatively minor, but none the less interesting revision to the GTX 1660 family that adds a SKU with faster GDDR6 memory for improved performance. Along with the GeForce GTX 1650 Super , these two cards are going to be the backbone of NVIDIA’s mainstream efforts to close out the year. And while NVIDIA’s other GTX 1660 cards aren’t going anywhere, as we’re going to see today, with its $229 price tag, the GDDR6-equipped GTX 1660 Super is pretty much going to make the other 1660 cards redundant.
Despite using a much cheaper CPU than my test system, there was no difference in the frame rates in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, with the Scan Gamer PC managing a healthy minimum frame rate of 54fps. In TU116, Nvidia replaces Turing’s Tensor cores with 128 dedicated FP16 cores per SM, which allow GeForce to process half-precision operations at 2x the rate of FP32. The other Turing-based GPUs boast double-rate FP16 as well through their Tensor cores, so TU116’s configuration serves to maintain that standard through hardware put in place specifically for this GPU. The following chart is an updated version of the one published in our GeForce GTX 1660 Ti review, which illustrates TU116’s massive improvement to half-precision throughput compared to GeForce GTX 1060 and its Pascal-based GP106 chip. Rather than upgrades, I think the biggest draw for the GTX 1660 will be with new PC builds—newcomers looking to put together a capable budget gaming PC will find plenty to like with this card.
Nvidia’s claimed boost over the GTX GB was spot on here with a 15% advantage in minimum frame rate courtesy of the GTX 1660. Stepping up to 2,560 x 1,440 and there’s very little difference between the RX 590 and GTX 1660, with just a small bump in the minimum frame rate for the Nvidia card. A minimum frame rate of 37fps is a great result here given this is a mid-range resolution at some fairly high settings in this game, although I’d be tempted to opt for the GTX 1660 Ti for a little more headroom.
That might look like a marginal performance difference, but it still matters. NVIDIA websites use cookies to deliver and improve the website experience. GeForce GTX SUPER Series graphics cards are powered by the NVIDIA Turing GPU architecture. Get 1.4X power efficiency over the previous generation for a faster, cooler, and quieter gaming experience. The gtx 1090 Ti and GTX 1660 are roughly similar in terms of clock speeds – in fact the latter offers higher base and boost frequencies. However, the more expensive card offers more Cuda cores as well as faster GDDR6 as opposed to GDDR5 memory, meaning the GTX 1660 trails in memory bandwidth at 192.1GB/sec compared to 288.1GB/sec. With a promised 15% performance boost over the GTX GB and up to 30% over the similarly-priced 3GB model of that card, the GTX 1660 still has what it takes to be an excellent 1080p HD gaming card, on paper at least.
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super is a fantastic card for budget gamers. Yet, it offers that boost in performance while still staying in the budget graphics card range that makes a card like this so attractive. Essentially, you don’t have to spend much more for that extra bit of performance. The Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER 8GB Video Card (GV-N206SAORUS-8GC) delivers superior graphics rendering performance for high-end desktop PCs used by professional creators and gamers alike.
Priced at £259/$279, GTX 1660 Ti is a direct replacement for GTX 1060, delivering a substantial increase in gaming frame-rates, often exceeding the power of the outgoing GTX 1070. The GTX 1660 still came out as the faster card every time, but the improvements offered were arguably so small that you probably wouldn’t notice them without the aid of a frame rate counter. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Super is based on the same TU116 GPU as both the GTX 1660 and the GTX 1660 Ti, but has the same 1,408 CUDA cores as the original 1660. The big difference over the original graphics card is the bump up to GDDR6 video memory, resulting in a boost in memory speed from 8Gbps to 14Gbps – that’s just as fast as the VRAM in the massively powerful RTX 2080 Ti.
