These models were the very first G-Shock watches to have a countdown timer. Many of these models came equipped with a pair of strap adapters and a single one-piece resin or nylon band. Casio refers to them as drainage slits; the idea is that water will drain out with no problems while in action when surfing.

It is available in numerous colors, several styles and even in some collectible limited editions, such as G-Shock x Sankuanz, G-Shock x Stash Graffiti-Style and G-Shock x Futura Graffiti Limited Edition. With the launch of its first watch in 1974, Casio entered the wristwatch market at a time when the watch industry had just discovered digital technology. As a company with cutting-edge electronic technology developed for pocket calculators, Casio entered this field confident that it could develop timepieces that would lead the market. Casio released the G-Shock in April 1983, to fill the demand for durable watches. In order to promote the G-Shock worldwide, the American division of Casio released a commercial in which an ice hockey player used the DW-5000C as a hockey puck to demonstrate the toughness of the watch.

It’s immediately obvious the GSW-H1000 is a G-Shock watch as it takes styling cues from a variety of existing G-Shock models, and congratulations should go to Casio for not watering down the looks. There’s no mistaking it for any other watch and everything G-Shock fans love about the design has been included. Perhaps surprisingly, it’s incredibly “watch-like” and if you’ve worn a previous generation Mudmaster, the Rangeman, or an older Gravitymaster G-Shock, the GSW-H1000 feels very similar to all of them. Its classic lineage makes the G-Shock GW-5000-IJF a favorite with watch collectors. Since they’re manufactured regularly in Japan, the G-Shock watches are easy to find at a good price.

The subtle tie-in of color from the dial to the inner strap, along with toned down contrast across the watch make for a understated affair. These also feature mineral glass to allow that decorative dial to shine through. One test of a great watch design is how well it works in different colorways. Go Rasta, denim or crystal, and you’ll have the 1980s on your wrist.
