Pilots, military personnel, and outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the ruggedness and features of the G-Shock Aviation Watch. The futurist dial has an analog display with Neobrite hands and indices with Arabid numerals at 12 and 6 o’clock. The dial lens is sapphire crystal, the toughest lens material available. The GA2000-1A9 has a sleeker look than the familiar chunky G-Shock. All of the watches in the series use carbon core construction in the inner casing to make them slimmer and lighter. The resin bands are made to be easily removed and interchangeable with a variety of bands sold separately.
The main screen is a 1.2-inch LCD, overlaid with a monochrome LCD for always-on duties. It’s a power-saving technique that avoids having to use the full-color screen for an always-on time display, and it works really well. There’s a helpful option to have a bright or dark always-on display, which aids visibility in difficult conditions.
There are a slew of one-offs in the G-SHOCK digital lineup, all inspired by the classic 6900 model. These models currently include the GW2310FB-1B4, GR8900A-1, the GDX6900FB-1, and the DW6900SK-1 with two other color variants, as well as some of the recent Revival Collection models. These are nearly identical g shock protection in appearance to many other models, but offer specific protection for extreme cold. The icy blue colorway is a standout, given its intended sub-zero use. The textile and leather strap ads a little variation for the obsessive collector. Standard models are usually in stock, while limited editions come and go.
As far as making the GSW-H1000 a true G-Shock smartwatch goes, Casio has fulfilled the brief perfectly. However, by rigidly sticking to the obvious remit, problems for a wider audience are introduced, starting with the size. It’s massive, and I say this as someone who likes G-Shock’s larger watches. The case measures 65mm by 56mm, and is 19.5mm thick, with a total weight of 104 grams. The shock-resistant sports watch gets attention with a flash alert and includes a moon and tide graph for watersports enthusiasts.
It comes equipped with a 1.2-inch capacitive touchscreen dual-layer display — a colour TFT LCD and a monochrome LCD. The monochrome display come with always-on function to show time, while the colour LCD shows maps, notifications, baby g shock sensor data, and other information. There are three models available, the H seen here in our photos with blue accent colors, the H1000-1A without the blue, and the brighter H A4 with a red strap and accents.
These newish additions to the lineup are all about tracking your workouts, whether they’re elaborate interval programs or simply a series of steps. The colorways are intended to make them more wearable with everyday clothes, encouraging you to keep it on and keep fit. Styled just like the originals, but now with full metal construction, including bracelets on some models.
It hasn’t become hot or sweaty, and there were times where I forgot I was wearing it, mostly due to the balance. It sits perfectly on my 6.5-inch wrist without needing to be worn too tightly or loosely, due to a pair of soft silicone pads where the strap meets the body. The case back is made from titanium which helps keep the weight down, aluminum has been used for the Start button, and the rest of the case is a tough resin that will be familiar to anyone who has owned a G-Shock before. The brand releases multiple exciting collaborations, consistently updates colors throughout its range, and releases models specific to location making them even more desirable for those gazing at them jealously from abroad. The 5.3 cm case of hard plastic and the silicone band is practically indestructible. The solar rechargeable battery has a life of 6 months on a full charge.
A super-illuminator LED light shows off the futuristic look of the 700Sk-1A model. Functions include a full auto-calendar, 12/24-hour format, stopwatch, and countdown timer. It also uses the dual display from the Casio Pro-Trek range, which blends a full color and low-res display to improve battery performance.
