Intel Or Amd Ryzen
There may be a stronger case to be made for games, but I find even that slightly doubtful. Intel’s Core i K also isn’t nearly as fast as the 5600X in gaming and lightly-threaded work, and overclocking doesn’t change the story in any meaningful way. It does have two additional cores that might make it a compelling value alternative for content creation-focused tasks, but its $375 price tag makes that an iffy proposition. The AMD Ryzen U with six cores / twelve threads within a Lenovo laptop at $449 USD is quite a steal. Here are some initial benchmarks of the Ryzen U under Ubuntu 21.04 Linux against various other Intel/AMD laptops.
Core i7 processors have larger amounts of cache that are able to help the processor handle large amounts of data and instructions without becoming overburdened. In contrast, the Ryzen 5 range is slightly slower than the Intel i7 processor. Thanks to the Zen architecture we mentioned above, the Ryzen 5 processors include clock frequency improvements, and enjoy speeds from 3.8MHz to 4.4MHz, depending on the gtx 1080 8gb model. As each Ryzen 5 processor is Zen-based, they are each made via a 14nm FinFET process, which helps to make the chip more efficient at carrying out instructions per cycle, as well as using less energy. SMT is also enabled, which is a process that allows for each core to run two threads at once, as well as featuring an innovative SoC design that allows for each chip to have greater overall bandwidth.
I am still more thoroughly testing the laptop on Linux now that getting the initial out-of-the-box Linux benchmarks completed but so far is working out fine. In using the laptop so far over the past week, this Lenovo gtx 1090 IdeaPad has worked out rather well for the price. The two main sore points are just 8GB of RAM and not using a USB-C power connector. The 8GB of RAM is a disappointment but not unexpected given the price.
The only downside is that unlike the Ryzen X, you cannot overclock the Intel chips and they also come with a lower cache. Motherboard makers do offer power limit overclocking but that will lead to higher temperatures and power consumption than the standard listed 65W TDP. AMD’s Ryzen X is now available at major online retailers and might just be the cheapest 6 core Zen CPU you can buy right now. The AMD Ryzen gtx 1090 X was launched back in 2019 along with the Ryzen X and was then aimed at the 9th Gen Intel Core lineup. However, the lineup offers great performance to budget users and might be the best option for them if they’re eyeing a 6 core chip. Given the choice between a laptop with Ryzen Mobile and another with Intel’s 8th Gen Core , we’d choose whichever machine is the better value at the time you’re shopping.
All in all, you have to choose the right CPU depending on your own usage, not based on benchmarks or what other people recommend. For quad-core CPUs, the $190 Ryzen X is the clear choice over any four-core Intel part in its price range. The evergreen Core i can hang with the 1500X in some of our tests, but the Ryzen chip’s eight threads give it enough of an advantage in a wide enough range of work that we’d heartily recommend the AMD chip instead. The i5-7500’s integrated graphics processor will still be of interest to some PC builders, but enthusiasts and gamers will likely be adding a discrete graphics card to their parts lists anyway. That said, $30 more buys you a lot more CPU in the Ryzen , so we’d save up and get the six-core chip if at all possible. In addition to lightning-fast clock speeds, Intel also offers a turbo boost, which is an overclocking feature Intel has been using within their processors for many years. Turbo boost allows for some of the i7 chip’s cores to run faster than their base clock speed when only one or two of the cores are needed.
The chip comes with 24 PCIe Gen 4 lanes, support for 3200 MHz memory. The 32 MB Game Cache is also said to deliver much better latencies in a wide variety of esports titles so that is something to consider for gamers on a budget when having to select between an AM4 & the LGA 1151 platforms. Now, it’s important to remember that the CPU is just one component of many in a computer.
