It’s been a while since I have looked into it, but the battery protection circuitry is all self contained in the battery. When the voltage drops to the minimum safe level for recharge it shuts off. There is nothing on the tool side that measures and monitors the voltage. I’ve been using knock off batteries and battery adapters for years with no issues. I use knock off Dewalt batteries on my Makita and Milwakuee tools daily with adapters, no issues at all. I’ve probably saved hundreds if not thousands in not having to buy into every battery/charger line, instead just having the Dewalt line of batteries.
