When put up against the so-so Intel Core i K, the AMD Ryzen X comes out shining on the other side, presenting serious competition for Intel (albeit at a slightly higher price point than we’re used to from Ryzens). The Ryzen X set records in some of our gaming results, as well as being one of the best values in price-to-performance that AMD offers in 2020. We love Ryzen 3000-series processors for their capable simultaneous multi-threading, big improvements in instructions per cycle over their predecessors, and faster clock speeds. With Ryzen 3000 CPUs, AMD now hangs with its Intel counterparts in gaming performance. Intel still maintains a slight edge, but AMD is more than competent and the overall value weighs heavily towards Team Red.
It was mostly trying to run factory overclock memory or CPU didn’t like certain DDR3 DIMMs. Incidentally, thank you for waiting on the reviews to let the platforms receive some updates so that you had a better opportunity to test with faster RAM and avoid some of the hiccups we saw on launch day. As I understand gigabyte gtx 1060 3gb turbo boost is disabled when overclocking Ryzens which means the performance on lightly-threaded loads would actually be worse. I’m not sure if the overclock affected the top turbo boost speed, so lightly threaded loads that were going up to 4.1GHz anyway might not be substantially affected.

I am still more thoroughly testing the laptop on Linux now that getting the initial out-of-the-box Linux benchmarks completed but so far is working out fine. In using the laptop so far over the past week, this Lenovo IdeaPad has worked out rather well for the price. The two main sore points are just 8GB of RAM and not using a USB-C power connector. The 8GB of RAM is a disappointment but not unexpected given the price.

AMD increased its Precision Boost clock rates across the board, with a peak of 4.9 GHz for the Ryzen X. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 isn’t exactly the latest GPU to have on your laptop.
AMD still offers many of the same advantages, like unrestrained overclockability on all SKUs and most motherboards (the A-series is the lone exception), but has discarded bundled coolers for its Ryzen 9 and 7 processors. Luckily for entry-level buyers, the 65W Ryzen X is the only Ryzen model that comes with a bundled cooler, and it’s adequate for most users. The AMD Ryzen X takes the throne as the no-compromise gaming chip for the mid-range, accentuated by class-leading application performance and power efficiency. Starting off with the Cinebench R23 test, the Lenovo Legion 5 managed to score 1157 and 7911 in single-core and multi-core tests respectively.
The Ryzen 5 chips make digital audio workstation performance more accesible than similarly-priced Intel parts, and that’s a major win for AMD. However, the Core i7-6800K’s total dominance of these tests suggests the Ryzen parts could do with more memory bandwidth to play with. At the punishing buffer size of 64, the older and lower-clocked chips in our lineup can’t handle the VI test at all. The Ryzen X redeems itself nicely over the i5-7500, and the Core i7-7700K only barely edges by the Ryzen s. The Core i7-6800K turns in a freakishly good performance here, though, and we can only presume that’s because of its scads of memory bandwidth compared to every other chip in our lineup. In the CPU-only phase of our testing, performance scales as expected with cores and threads, save for the Core i7-6800K’s surprise win.
