I already knew that the DW735 is a good machine, but you pointed out some features that make me more comfortable with my decision. I just watched a YouTube video on the DeWalt 734 planer. That video claims in the manual that the gap you saw in the out feed table to the mid table is supposed to be that way. It’s intended to keep pressure of the board to the rollers and reduce snipe. You might check to see if that’s correct as it’s likely true for the 735x as well.
Some of the categories that we set out to evaluate we decided not to include in the final ranking. However, we did provide information from that category as we feel it’s valuable to some readers. Price is often a huge part of the equation when determining what tool is best for you. There’s a huge difference in pricing in this test from the low $300 range up over $600. We are ranking these straight on the lowest to highest with prices available at the time of publication. We realize there is a “value” proposition that many will look at, but that will factor into our overall ranking when price and the other categories are combined.
We’re not going to rank this category as we feel a bench-top shop tool like this will always require some setup and fine tuning. Of the 8 planers Makita definitely has the best system for making those adjustments. I ended up doing everything in speed 2 because I thought the finish in speed 2 was perfect. Besides having a two speed gear box as a nice option, this machine uses three knives which is a great feature. Might be one of the reasons that speed two looks so nice. Very basically, a planer is a cutting tool that makes the top face of a board parallel to the bottom board.
This planer has a 15-amp motor that produces 8,500 RPMs. It has a two-knife cutterhead and a depth of cut of up to 1/8-inch. The Interna-Lok head clamp holds the workpiece in place better than standard rollers, minimizing snipe. Though the 2012NB doesn’t have a built-in dust collection port, you can buy an attachment separately. The best benchtop planers have dust ports that attach to a shop vacuum or dust collection system to minimize the mess.
Can you actually put 13″ work through the 735x without it bogging down or, put another way, how thick can the cut be at 13″ without bogging down too much? That would be an excellent test, especially since I think you were starting to see the effect of width with the poplar. The real question will be do you have a separate dedicated circuit, because if you run this on the same circuit as your dust collection I’m certain that will be a problem. Everywhere I look it shows the Ridgid R4331 as being a part of their lifetime warranty but your chart shows a 3-year limited warranty. Here we are again trying to rank the tools in our Head-to-Head and give you a winner. The more of these we do, the more we learn, and in this evaluation we’ve taken a slightly different approach.
The first is to cut the project boards a few inches long so that the snipe occurs on the excess sections of wood. Theoretically, the way to fix this is to perfectly level the infeed and outfeed tables. As near as I can tell, I have, but some snipe remains. It’s dewalt Hand tools not so bad that I can’t hide it with sanding, but it is enough to be a problem in more precision work. Snipe is a common problem in planers that occurs when wood passes through the planer and is only in contact with one of the two rollers on the way in or out.
In my initial comments about my DW735, I failed to mention that I purchased as a used unit. The prior owner did not have a dust collector and he obviously had run some wood through it planing across the grain. This procedure throws out long fibers of wood rather than chips. The discharge chute was quite clogged when I first used it. To answer your question about my dust collector, I have a 1.5 HP JDS DustForce single stage dust collector and it handles the planer very well. I had to unclog the discharge chute and rotate the blades.
Its infeed and outfeed are also extended to hold up to 33.5 -inch planks of wood comfortably. The infeed and outfeed are all fitted with rubber rollers between the blades which drive the lumber smoothly through the planer swiftly also reducing snipe. Good planer, maybe a little too expensive for the amount of snipe I get. If you plan on using a planer daily, a bench planer obviously isn’t the planer for you. One of the unique features the DeWalt DW735 Planer has is two feed speeds – one meant for quick thickness planing and the other for detailed finishing. Speed 1 slows the automatic feed, allowing the blades to cut the workpiece 179 times per inch which leaves a nice smooth finish.
