You will get an extra set of knives, as well as infeed and outfeed tables with this thickness planer. This is simply a larger package of the 735 planer including the earlier discussed 735 planer plus replacement blades, infeed, and outfeed tables. It is a cost-saving package delivering the same quality service including the 15AMP motor with a 20,000RPM and a no-load blade speed of 10,000rpm.
I’m not young anymore so what ever I can do to make my life easier is a great thing. This DRO has been in place since Christmas 2020 and has performed flawlessly. I did install a usb battery pack just to make sure I had power all the time.
At least for me I’m never in such a rush that an extra pass or two isn’t a deal killer for me. The wood samples we used in this test were 1×4 Mahogany decking, 1 x 8 Poplar, 1×6 Oak and 1×6 Maple. We knew that the 1×8 Poplar at a maximum cut depth would tax the power of these planers.
One thing that DeWalt has done with the DW735 is add a built in blower for clearing wood shavings from the blades. It has a surprising amount air flow, and if used without some type dewalt tools of dust collector, it will shoot wood shavings everywhere. It does a wonderful job at keeping dust and shavings from building up on the blades, thus lengthening their life.
As well, the blades are reversible when they dull, and if you run into a stray nail or screw with your planer, it will only damage one blade as opposed to the entire knife. Not surprisingly, spiral knife planers are often significantly more expensive than straight knife models. I scored this package with the dewalt planer stand a year or so ago for $599 on one of Home Depots one day deals. If one were interested in a stand, that’s the only comparable or better deal I’ve ever seen on this planer.
We set up to remove 1/64″ per pass to reduce the load on the feed rollers and found that the 15-amp, 20,000-rpm motor was up to the task. The 734 has powerful feed rollers and provides 33-1/2″ of support from the infeed and outfeed tables, so it can handle 6′ to 8′ boards. For the 16’ and longer planks we helped push and pull the stock through. It is a single-speed planer with a room for large planks of wood up to 6 inches in depth with a depth stop that allows you to return to your most frequent depth every time.
There’s a calibrated knob here you can set to adjust the depth of the cut. A good example here is the carriage lock that prevents the movements causing snipe. The DW735 is more obviously geared towards the more serious wood workers. This is why they don’t include the infeed and outfeed tables in the package. It offers a 96-cpi cutting speed that can give you a really smooth finish for your wood.
I can move the planer easily and it takes up very little space. The first board I have ever done looks better than anything I have purchased at the big box wood suppliers. The DeWalt Planer DW735X includes an extra set of knives and a set of infeed-outfeed tables. This DeWalt Planer is designed to out-perform all other planers in its class!
As you probably know, you can’t just walk into Home Depot and get Purple Heart. For that we had to visit our local lumber yard who has just about any wood around. All their stock is actual lumber where the thicknesses are all different sizes. So it was our responsibility to get all the lumber down to the same thickness and that’s where the dewalt Hand tools came into play.
An old Junior Jack plane (#5 1/4) or a smaller smooth plane (#3) should work well at minimum cost. If budget is not a constraint, there is always the deluxe option of a Lie-Nielsen or Veritas roughing plane. Apparently, whatever is left of Delta no longer makes replacement blades for its throw away blade planers. Woodcraft has a connection with the third party who now makes these blades available.
