At least for me I’m never in such a rush that an extra pass or two isn’t a deal killer for me. The wood samples we used in this test were 1×4 Mahogany decking, 1 x 8 Poplar, 1×6 Oak and 1×6 Maple. We knew that the 1×8 Poplar at a maximum cut depth would tax the power of these planers.
You set the cut depth and feed the board into one end. A powered roller grabs the wood and pushes it under the cutter head, which trims anywhere from 1/32” to ⅛” off the top before pushing it out the other side. Then it’s rinse and repeat until you’re happy with the result. For BARBASHELA’s planks we wanted to remove just over a 1/16″ from the rough-sawn boards to reach the target thickness and that required several passes per plank.

The machine sits on a cast aluminum base, and although the casing is molded plastic, it’s solid. Overall, the DeWalt DW735 seems to jump across the line into the professional realm from a small-scale standpoint. Snipe may be unavoidable to some degree, dewalt tools but some planers do better than others to minimize its effect. The best way to avoid snipe on your finished product is to leave your boards longer than necessary when planing so you can cut the sniped ends off before you use it for your project.
The DeWalt DW735 is a perfect upgrade from the lower powered benchtop planer, and very effectively bridges the gap to professional shop machinery. We’re not quite ready to open a mill workshop, but this planer does everything that we’ve asked of it and has performed admirably. It’s very easy to make small depth changes because of the oversize hand wheel. Each full revolution of the wheel changes the depth of the dewalt Hand tools cut by 1/16th of an inch, which enables the user to easily make depth changes to even a 1/64th of an inch with a quarter turn. The DeWalt DW735 comes with a handy Allen wrench that you use for loosening the screws for the plastic cover of the cutter head and the blades themselves. Also, we thought it was kind of cool that the Allen wrench includes a couple of magnets on the handle for easy removal of the blades.
