A planer doesn’t need much juice to shave a layer off the top of these materials. It is okay to plane most types of painted wood but the blades may dull faster. For safety and environmental reasons, planing painted wood with lead based or cementitious paint is NOT RECOMMENDED.
The edges of the Planar Digital are sharp and I scraped my arm several times. In addition, the electrical cord gets in the way no matter what I tried. I do not keep my power on to my tools, which means that every time I wanted to use the planar, I had to recalibrate the Planar Digital.
The as-shipped accuracy of the tables varied between the different models. We adjusted the in-feed and out-feed tables separately and then checked for level across the entire machine. The worst measured vertical deviation from flat at the edge of the outfeed table nearly 1/8” above the surface of the planer. All of the machines except the DEWALT DW735X needed minor adjustments dewalt Hand tools to reach a level surface. Ultimately the surface finish is really important, especially if the finish reduces the time to prepare the work piece of paint, stain and or clear finishes. We applied blue chalk to the surface of the boards in order to improve our visual inspection combined with a physical inspection to rank the surface finish for each planer.
It is a three-blade planer with ready-Levelized infeed and outfeed benches. It features a four-column manual lockdown mechanism that reduces snipe and also keeps the timber in place for accurate cutting which gives you a very smooth finish. The feed rate of a planer is the speed at which the wood is pulled through the machine. The slower a board moves through the planer, the more often the blades come in contact with it. This results in a better cut quality, because there are less gaps between each cut.
An alternative to using power wood planers is using hand planes. The skill required to properly dimension wood with a hand plane takes time to master. For that reason, a good thickness planer will save you valuable shop time while improving the quality of your work. With the benchtop planer turned off, lower the cutterhead onto the board to get a starting point. Remove the board, turn on the machine, and run the board through the planer. Continue to lower the cutterhead for each pass until you’ve shaved the board down to the desired height.
We also wanted to see how the different hardwoods would exercise the planer capacity. Snipe is fairly common with thickness planers, especially benchtop models like the ones in this evaluation. We compared dewalt accessories the length of snipe for each planer and material type.
