Best Benchtop Thickness Planer

Upon first receiving the DeWalt DW735 Planer we noticed that not only was the box pretty large, it was also heavy. Most benchtop planers have some heft to them, however, the DW735 weighs in at 92 pounds. That realization prompted us to quickly build a rolling base for the planer to stand on. You can use them to create consistent thicknesses on several boards for woodworking purposes or to uncover the beauty hidden underneath reclaimed wood. It has a set of lockable casters, allowing you to lock it into place when feeding heavy materials through and then roll this heavy tool out of the way when done.

While very subjective, we ranked the planers based on the samples of Maple shown below. While we’re not ranking this category we do feel the data is interesting and informative. As you can see above the DEWALT dewalt tools DW735X pulls some serious amps under load. It points to the much more powerful motor in that unit. The power difference was clear during the planing operations as it didn’t seem to care what we ran through it.

I have a degree in mechanical engineering and together with my team, we use this medium to share our insights and recommendations with you. Yes, the DW735 has more features, and can handle slightly wider boards, but the two Dewalt planers are capable of performing the same function. Another difference between them is that the DW735 has a fan assisted dust ejection system to pump or eject the sawdust out of the planer as you plane with it. Dust collection is easy with the DW734, as it comes equipped with dust hood which you can easily attach to a shop vac for effective dust collection. The slower speed is for when you’re removing a lot of material at once, while the faster speed is for applying a fine finish to the wood to get a fine finish.

The nice thing here is the snipe should be predictable for each model and allow users to plan accordingly. Users of the DEWALT DW735X will ultimately “waste” more material over the life of the planer. However, with all the planers having relatively the same amount of snipe we’re not ranking this category either but rather letting you see how they all compared. We measured the no-load feed rate of each planer and compared that to the feed rates under load for different material types.

We planed nearly 70ft of 2-inch mahogany to 1-1/2 inch without overloading the system at all. Planers can be some of the heaviest tools in your shop. Benchtop planers weigh between 60 and 100 pounds on average, so it dewalt accessories may be wise to keep it on your benchtop rather than moving it around. Cutterhead speed refers to how quickly the motor spins the cutterhead. Many planers use pulleys and belts from the motor to spin the cutterhead.

Jay, first off let me say how much I enjoy your videos! Like you and others have mentioned, out of the box I too had problems with snipe and later with the feed as well. For the snipe I saw and copied your shelving solution and it has worked great! As for the feed problem I’ve found if a person keeps the rollers clean it pretty much eliminates any problems. I included a link showing how I capture the chips/dust. I put the planer on a short cart to store in the corner out of the way when not in use as I realized I barely ever use it.
